Frequently Asked FlashStart Course and TESOL Certification Questions

What does TESOL mean?

Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages

Is it different to TEFL or ESL?

TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) and ESL (English as a Second Language) are the same as TESOL, its just the name that differs from one location to another. For simplicity and because TESOL is well known, we use this title for our course.

Do I need any prerequisites?

All you need is to speak English well.

How long does it take to complete the course?

Although our main TESOL 150 course indicates 150 hours, this course can be completed in 20-30 hours excluding time for reviews and practice.

* The best part is you can go at your own pace! Hunker down for three straight days or a little at a time over a few weeks, the choice is yours!

*We expect the student will do both over time and also consume the contents of the TESOL Manual, along with prep time for your practicum, which makes up the 150 hours the certification claims.

How do I find a job once I have my certificate?

Not only do we cover that thoroughly in the course but we also show you how to nail your interview. Once they see the skills you have they’ll be begging you to work for them!

What equipment do I need to take the course?

1 black and 1 red sock, your sense of humor, some uncooked dried beans or pasta, a squeeky rubber toy, your sense of humor, a deck of cards, a newspaper, 2 pens one red one black, a pencil, paper, did we mention your sense of humor? And a video camera or mobile phone to film your practice with a group.

Oh, and your sense of humor.

Do I need to be an expert in English grammar to be a TESOL instructor?

Definitely not. The course will show you how to handle grammar questions your students ask. Teaching English involves so much more than teaching grammar, there is reading, writing and speaking as well. FlashStart has proven techniques that our TESOL graduates use to help their students absorb grammar without arduously studying it. Since your students will absorb proper grammar through proper word placement, music, a grammar matrix, word substitution circles and sentence cards you will not need to be an expert in English grammar.

Our course equips students to teach ANY language so our approach to grammar is to teach the scientific principles about acquiring good grammar rather than grammar rules which differ from language to language.

What's in your course?

FlashStart’s TESOL is made up of mostly video content.  It consists of:

  • 13 Modules
  • 90 Units
  • 57 Quizzes
  • Extra resources for job placement and  career development
  • TESOL Teacher’s Manual
Are there any tests?

Over half of the units have brief quizzes designed to help you remember the main points. At the end of the course, you will make a video of you and some friends or fellow students practicing some of the methods you learned. The video becomes a tool you can use going forward to help you find work.

Is there a practicum?

Yes, in two stages: Observational practicum is achieved throughout the whole course with the use of practical demonstrations.

Practice practicum is achieved by your teaching student/s that you hand pick and walk through a lesson using some of what you’ve learned.

Do you have a refund policy?

We sure do.You can get a refund within 30 days of your purchase, all you have to do is send us an email and we will refund your enrollment fee right away. Our goal has always been to create a happy, thriving community. However if a certificate and personalized TESOL manual has been generated and sent to you within that 30 day period, the refund offer is no longer valid.

Where can I teach English with my FlashStart TESOL Certificate?

Currently our graduates are teaching successfully in over 20 countries. Each country has its own set of requirements but generally speaking FLASHstart’s TESOL certificate on its own is sufficient to find work in many countries like Central America, South America, parts of Africa, Eastern Europe, Italy, Portugal, Spain, Costa Rica, Brazil, Singapore and Australia. There are some countries in Asia that now require English teachers to have a degree to obtain a work visa so if you plan to teach there you may consider teaching privately online.

Our TESOL Certificate is designed for those who want to move to developing countries where there is a greater need for teachers and want to teach mainly spoken English to support themselves living abroad than in developed countries. In much of the rest of the world an English speaker with no Teaching Degree but a TESOL Certificate can teach in colleges and universities. Many countries recognize TESOL Certification as adequate recognition of an English speaker’s ability to teach English.

Teaching in countries like USA, Canada and the UK will require a degree from a college/university and teaching experience. If you are looking to teach in those countries you would have to consider teaching privately to immigrants where you live or students overseas.

Is the course Accredited?

FlashStart is not associated with any university or college and has purposely avoided paying an independent ‘accrediting’ service as its innovative but scientifically sound whole-brain methods are so vastly different from the traditional approach to teaching language. Our teachers’ success in delivering first rate language instruction speaks for itself. We are primarily oriented to those who want to teach in developing countries where accreditation has not to date been required.
